For over 30 years, I’ve worked with organisations and businesses in technical and industrial fields such as energy production, glassmaking and railways.

Glass, from the production line to the studio

Alongside the many technical documents I have translated for the glassmaking industry, my first experience in translating more creative material was almost 30 years ago. This work was for a local glass museum and adjacent studio, now the MusVerre, which houses Europe’s largest collection of contemporary glass art.

By translating the exhibition catalogues published twice yearly following each new artist’s residency, I discovered the many facets of glass-making techniques and the myriad approaches to this medium.

Until its publication ended five years ago, I also translated Verre & Création, a quarterly journal for international glass artists.

From smart textiles to embroidered Leavers lace

Textile production was the backdrop to my university studies and work in teaching English as a foreign language, from the red brick mills and chimneys of Manchester to the textile trading towns of Roubaix and Tourcoing in northern France.

So when I was given the opportunity to translate a monthly newsletter for CETI, the European Centre for Innovative Textiles in Roubaix, I was more than happy to steep myself in the innovations taking place in this centuries-old industry.

Other translation opportunities, such as the texts of an exhibition of costumes made for Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby movie in 2012, introduced me to the Leavers looms of Calais and Caudry which produce the fine lace used in bridal wear and lingerie, contrasting elegantly with the world of technical textiles.

A building’s beauty is not just skin-deep!

I have translated many building specifications over the years, some dating back to the construction of the Channel Tunnel.

Recent projects include translating building compliance audit reports prior to the sale of industrial and warehousing buildings. My knowledge of construction and building design is also useful when applied to translations for tourist offices or architects.

For instance, thanks to my understanding of the industrial heritage of our northern European cities, I’m ideally placed to work on texts celebrating the beauty of historic buildings, especially those of the Art Nouveau period.

How I guarantee quality

To me, authenticity is fundamental. Translation is a skill acquired through many years of experience and excellent command of the source language. For the last 30 years, I have immersed myself in French culture, working with a variety of companies and organisations, which enables me to grasp all the nuances of a text.

When it comes to the target language, being a native speaker is not enough. I therefore continually maintain my English-language skills by reading widely (including specialist articles), travelling, and feeding my natural curiosity for what’s going on in the English-speaking world.

I feel most comfortable with projects where I have in depth knowledge of the subject matter. For example, I wouldn’t normally translate a tourist brochure or museum catalogue if I don’t have first-hand knowledge of the place.

I also build a tailor-made glossary for each of my clients to ensure I incorporate the most accurate terminology into your texts.

Finally, I read over my work several times to check for accuracy. For texts intended for publication, I also recommend that one of my trusted colleagues checks your translation (this incurs an additional cost and extra time).
